Background of the Study
Obesity is a multifactorial condition influenced by lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors. In Nkanu West, the prevalence of obesity has raised concerns regarding its genetic underpinnings. This study assesses the genetic predisposition to obesity by identifying specific gene variants associated with weight gain and metabolic dysfunction (Ibekwe, 2023). Utilizing genomic screening, epidemiological surveys, and lifestyle assessments, the research aims to isolate genetic markers that may predict susceptibility to obesity. The investigation considers how traditional dietary patterns and sedentary behaviors interact with genetic predispositions, thereby influencing obesity rates (Chukwuemeka, 2024). This multifaceted approach is designed to provide a clearer understanding of the interplay between genetics and environment in obesity development, offering potential pathways for targeted interventions and personalized treatments (Okeke, 2025). The findings could have significant implications for public health strategies aimed at reducing the obesity epidemic in Nkanu West.

Statement of the Problem
The increasing prevalence of obesity in Nkanu West is concerning, yet the genetic factors contributing to this trend remain underexplored. Limited data on genetic predisposition impedes the development of personalized interventions and effective public health strategies (Ekwueme, 2023). This study seeks to address this deficiency by identifying key genetic markers associated with obesity, providing a foundation for improved risk assessment and targeted health interventions (Nnamani, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify gene variants associated with obesity.

  2. To assess the prevalence of these variants in the local population.

  3. To recommend strategies for targeted obesity interventions.

Research Questions:

  1. What gene variants are linked to obesity in Nkanu West?

  2. How prevalent are these genetic markers in the community?

  3. How can genetic information improve obesity intervention strategies?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant genetic predisposition to obesity in Nkanu West.

  2. Specific gene variants are highly correlated with obesity.

  3. Targeted interventions based on genetic data can reduce obesity prevalence.

Significance of the Study
This study will elucidate the genetic factors influencing obesity, enabling the development of personalized treatment and prevention strategies. Its outcomes will support public health initiatives aimed at curbing the obesity epidemic in Nkanu West (Uche, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing genetic predisposition to obesity in Nkanu West Local Government Area only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulation.

  • Genetic Predisposition: An increased likelihood of developing a particular condition due to one’s genetic makeup.

  • Metabolic Dysfunction: Impaired metabolic processes that affect normal body function.
